Home Care vs. Retirement Home

At some point, many Ontario families face the same question.

Is it time to look at a retirement home, or is home care a better fit?

There is no universal right answer, but the decision usually comes down to three things:

  • How much support is needed
  • How important staying home is to your loved one
  • What each option actually costs and involves.

Here is a clear look at both.

What Is a Retirement Home, Exactly?

A retirement home is a private residential facility where seniors live independently while having access to meals, amenities, and varying levels of care on site.

In Ontario, retirement homes are privately operated. They are also licensed and regulated by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) under the Retirement Homes Act, 2010.

There are over 700 licensed retirement homes in Ontario. Costs vary widely by location, unit size, and the level of care available, but the CMHC Senior Housing Report has put the average monthly cost of renting a seniors’ housing space in Ontario at approximately $3,999. That figure does not include additional care service fees, which are purchased separately.

A retirement home suits people who want a structured community environment, accessible shared amenities, and support on-site, all without the isolation that can come with living alone.

What Is Home Care?

Home care means professional support delivered in your loved one’s own home on a schedule that fits their life. Trained caregivers, such as our PSWs, visit regularly to help with personal care, meals, housekeeping, companionship, medication reminders, and more. This allows your loved one to keep their home, routines, neighbourhood, and independence.

Private home care in Ontario is arranged directly with a provider like Vitality, and the cost depends on the number of hours and type of support required, making it a flexible option for families who need part-time help or want to supplement publicly funded services.

Which Option Is Right for Your Family?

A retirement home tends to be the right fit when someone would benefit from a social community environment or has complex or advancing medical needs.

Home care tends to be the right fit when your loved one is medically stable, values their independence, has strong ties to their home and community, or when the care need is specific. Home care can range from a few hours a day, a post-surgery recovery period, overnight care, respite care or regular support while the family works.

The two options are not mutually exclusive. Some families use home care to delay or avoid a retirement home move. Others use it alongside retirement living to fill gaps in facility-provided support.

What Home Care Looks Like with Vitality

At Vitality Living Home Care, every care plan begins with an in-home assessment by a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). That nursing oversight means the support your loved one receives from a PSW is clinically appropriate, not just a task list handed to a staff member by a coordinator or scheduler.

If you are trying to decide whether home care is the right option for your family, we are happy to talk it through, no obligation, no pressure.
